The Gibson Woods Chapter of Wild Ones continues to grow as the interest in gardening with native plants increases. The gardeners learn more about native plants, from what works well for your soil type to what attracts birds and butterflies. After all, the purpose of natural landscaping is to put something back for the original inhabitants of any given area and make the landscape more environmentally sound.
Meetings are normally held the 1st Saturday of the month at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve, located at 6201 Parrish Ave. in Hammond at 10AM.
It is also interesting and educational to learn about native plants and their traditional uses. Members research a different plant each month and share the information at each meeting. Guest speakers are scheduled when possible and a native plant sale is held each spring. If you are interested in incorporating natives in your landscape, Gibson Woods Wild Ones would be glad to help.

Drew Hart, US Forest & Daiva Gylys, SCA, NWI Community Native Tree Planting Program
The Student Conservation Association has worked in partnership with CommuniTree to plant and maintain native trees in the northwest Indiana communities of Hammond, East Chicago, Whiting, and Gary for two years. This work is primarily supported through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Chi Cal Rivers Fund. Since the spring of 2017, the SCA has hired young people to plant over 2,000 native trees on public land in these communities. They have successfully engaged over 1,500 volunteers and have supported over 35 public volunteer workdays. Come learn about the strategies and partnerships that help this program be successful.
