Marsh Minute #21
Date:  July 20, 2010
Topic:  Information about 2010 Dove Season and Youth Deer Hunt Information.

Start of the 2010-2011 Grand Kankakee Marsh hunting season is almost here.  Here is some information about the first two seasons that open at the park.

Dove Hunters:  Sunflowers are doing well and it appears as if we are on course for a successful dove season.  We currently have a total of four fields that will be open for hunting at the start of the season.  As of now season dates have not been set by the federal government, but we will post the dates as soon as they are announced.  For a complete list of park rules and regulations click here http://lakecountyparks.com/hunter.htm

Youth Deer Hunters:  Youth deer season is Sept. 25 and 26 2010.  RULES HAVE CHANGED SINCE LAST YEAR SO MAKE SURE AND READ THE NEW REGULATIONS IN 2010-2011 INDIANA HUNTING AND TRAPPING REGULATIONS BEFORE COMING TO HUNT AT THE PARK.  The biggest change is that youths will be allowed to harvest antlered or antlerless deer.  Grand Kankakee Marsh County will once again offer the youth hunt free of charge.  Youth hunters must have a valid Indiana hunting license, be accompanied by an adult 18 years of age and older, and wear hunter orange while hunting.  Draw time will be 5:00 am.  For a complete list of park rules and regulations click here http://lakecountyparks.com/hunter.htm

Marsh Minute #20

Topic: Frequently Asked Questions about Horseback Riding, Mountain Biking, and Hiking.

Question #1:  What is allowed on the levy trails at Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park?

Answer#1:  At GKM you are allowed to hike, ride horses, and mountain bike any of the river levy trails and interior levy trails.  GKM has more than 30 miles of levy trails throughout the park.  Please note all off-road vehicles are strictly forbidden in the park.  Also the park is closed to the non hunting public during the hunting season.  Trails may be closed during special events like the annual Voyageur Rendezvous the weekend after Mother's Day in May.

Question #2:  Is there anything I should be made aware of before using the trails at the park?

Answer #2:  Yes, be aware that water levels often vary within the park and we are subject to seasonal flooding.  This seasonal flooding may cause some interior levies to become impassable.  Also critters like muskrats and ground hogs may burrow into levies make them unstable.  Park staff tries to monitor levies closely, however if you find an animal hole please let us know and we will repair it as soon as possible.  Finally, remember to bring your bug spray!!!

Question #3:  Are there any special rules and regulations about when and where I can go?

Answer #3:  Just a few.  During the non hunting season hikers, and bike riders are allowed to go anywhere in the park they choose.  Horse riders are asked to please stay off the turf around the cabin and picnic shelter across the street.  Also, remember to clean up after your animals. Trail maps can be found online, or in the mail box by the pop machine.  I recommend if this is your first visit to the park that you stay on or near the river levy trail until you have learned your way around park.

Topic:  Whooping Crane and River Otter

Earlier this spring park staff was excited to see two protected species of animals in the Park.

  1. Whooping Crane:  One of North America’s most spectacular birds.  Adult birds stand 45-50 inches high, and are pure white with black wings tips.  Whooping cranes also have red on their foreheads and checks.  The Whooping Crane was reduced by hunting and habitat destruction to about 15 birds in 1937.  Strictly monitored and protected the current population is around 300 birds.  Park staff spotted this bird at many different locations throughout the park with large flocks of Sandhill Cranes.  The crane did not stay long, but park staff was excited to see such a rare bird in the park.

  2. River Otter:  River otters were reintroduced to Indiana in the mid-to late-1990’s.  The distribution of river otter has expanded every since reintroduction and they potentially can be found throughout the state.  River otters are a protected species and care should be taken around them.

Waterfowl Update

So far this season 740 hunters have harvested a total of 387 birds.  From November 2, 2009 – November 8, 2009 hunters harvested a total of 43 birds.  The species of birds harvested over the past week include 27 mallards, 3 wood ducks, 6 green wing teal, 2 shovelors, and 4 Canada geese.  The refuges in gooselake and hog marsh are still holding a fair amount of birds.  However, calm days with clear skies seem to be discouraging new birds from coming south.

The park is currently hunting spots 1-14 and little hickory marsh.  Little hickory marsh was opened to hunting on Saturday November 7, 2009.  LHM will remain open to hunters as long as we have huntable water.

Deer Update

Topic:  It is beginning to feel a lot like Hunting Season

For many of us the first days of fall give us an uncontrollable urge to get out in the woods.  The cooler temperatures bring back a flood of memories of the countless hours we have spent in the field.  On September 26 and 27 Grand Kankakee offered the opportunity for some youngsters to get out and create their own memories.  I am of course talking about the Indiana youth deer hunt.  Over the weekend 14 youngsters hunted at the park.  Although only two youths harvested deer, almost all saw deer.  But, if you think you missed your chance to take your youngster out for a youth hunt you are mistaken.

On October 10 and 11 Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park will be open for the youth waterfowl hunt.  If you are interested, make sure you are at the check in cabin by 4:30 a.m. for the draw.  There will be no charge for the youth waterfowl hunt.  Remember to check the website for GKM waterfowl hunting regulations.  Also make sure you comply and follow all rules and regulations set by the Department of Natural Resources.  If you have any further questions please call the park at (219) 552-0033.  Email info@lakecountyparks.com if you have any comments about this post.

See You at the Park!!!
