Horse Riding

Horse back riding

Horse Riding is permitted at four Lake County Parks. Riding may be done at Stoney Run on the one mile perimeter trail (horses are not allowed on the grass/turf and the trail is closed at Stoney Run December through March). Riders are permitted at Deep River on the north side of the park (not the historic area). Note that the sulky track area off Ainsworth Road and the County Line Picnic area are not open during the winter. Riding is also permitted at Buckley Homestead in the back 80 on non-special event weekends. Park in the visitor center lot on Hendricks Road and ride your horse to the barnyard and around to the 80 acres. Horses are permitted at the Grand Kankakee Marsh on the levees except during hunting season.

Trails Closed

Horse trails are closed at Stoney Run from December through March. Additionally, trails may close at any location due to maintenance or when weather conditions require it.

Gate Fees

Gate fees apply at Stoney Run when a gatekeeper is on duty. Horseback riding is not permitted at the parks during special events. It is the rider's responsibility to find out in advance if there is a special event at the parks. Call 219-769-7275 for specific dates.

Maps

Maps of the equestrian trails can be found on each park's page.
